Bollywood dance is a richly woven tapestry with its roots in ancient Indian history, pop culture and global influences. It’s not just one specific style of dance, but an amalgamation of many dance styles. We bring you Bollywood dance that is truly finessed, elevated and redefined. The essence and style of songs and medleys are beautifully translated into movement and choreography. We often incorporate elements of Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop and Latin dance styles to create unique fusions of the East and West, set against the background of traditional folk and classical South Asian dance forms such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Raas/Garba and Bhangra.

Performance

Performance is an important part of our dance program. Students have the opportunity to perform on stage at America’s Got Bollywood, held twice a year in Spring and Fall. The show is the Bay Area’s largest Bollywood resident show and is a grand celebration of the best and biggest Bollywood talent pool in the Bay. Spectacular displays of dance skills, energy, music, production, choreography and costumes have mesmerized audiences for years!

Class Content

Classes begin with a warm up, and then progress to the learning of choreography. Instructors focus on style, technique, formations and performance. The level of the class determines the elements of choreography and the complexity of movement. Instructors select songs and medleys for their classes, and is often done in consultation with students. We pick a variety of themes and styles quarter after quarter to ensure students are challenged, excited and continually introduced to new artistic concepts.

Class Levels

Our structured Bollywood dance class program is intended to provide a true progression from one level to the next. Students are challenged at each level with a technical syllabus that is translated by their instructors into creative ideas and insanely fun choreography!

Basic

Prerequisites: None. Open to new and continuing Basic students.

The Basic class introduces students to fundamental steps, techniques and styles in Bollywood dance along with an emphasis on posture, alignment, strength, flexibility and coordination. There is a focus on performance – as expressions and emotions are intrinsic to Bollywood. Gaining self-confidence is an important aspect and goal of this level. Recommendations to higher level class is based on instructor approval.

New students are required to enroll in a Basic class as a starting point in the dance program (new students with prior dance experience can attend an audition to be placed in a higher level class).

Intermediate

Prerequisites: Completion of the Basic level and instructor approval to enroll in the Intermediate level.

The Intermediate class consists of intricate steps and choreography along with a greater emphasis on the performance aspect of dance. The skills studied in the Basic level are further honed; and more complex elements such as prop work, floor routines, turns, formations and partner work are explored. To enroll in an Intermediate class, the student must have mastered all the fundamental steps taught in the Basic class and be promoted by the instructor.

Advanced

Prerequisites: i) Completion of the Intermediate level and Intermediate class instructor recommendation for evaluations ii) passing the evaluation.

Both the Advanced and Master level classes engage students by combining various styles and steps in challenging combinations. Bollywood at this level becomes more of a fusion of styles. The emphasis on stage theatrics is highlighted so each student can further develop her/his individual performance skills. Clear and precise execution becomes the key. To enroll in an Advanced level class, the student must have mastered all the steps taught in the Intermediate class and:

  1. Be recommended by the Intermediate instructor for promotion
  2. Clearing the student evaluations which are conducted in Milpitas 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the quarter

Master
